David Harel — the inventor of Statecharts — tells a story from his early days working on the idea:
In 1983, during a design session, an Air Force pilot walked into the room and stared at a large Statechart on the blackboard. Someone explained: “These rounded rectangles are states, and the arrows are transitions.”
The pilot studied it for a couple of minutes, then said:
“I think you have a mistake down here; this arrow should go over here, not over there.”He was right!
That pilot wasn’t a software engineer. He just knew the right behavior of the avionic system shown in the Statechart.
That’s the power of intuitive modeling: it turns system logic into something non-programmer, domain experts can reason about together. And in the era of AI‑aided development, that shared understanding is becoming one of the most valuable assets a team can have.
